BALANCING RESEARCH AND EDUCATION IN THE SCIENCES

Abstract

Research comprises creative and systematic work undertaken to increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of humans, culture and society, and the use of this knowledge to devise new applications. Research is used to establish or confirm facts, reaffirm previous results, solve problems, support theorems, and develop new theories. Original research produces new knowledge rather than simply summarising or presenting existing knowledge in a new form. It can involve experimental or analytical work and is an important criterion for academic publication and graduate research.
