Language is the human capacity for developing and using complex systems of communication, and also refers to any specific instance of such a system; its philosophical study dates back to ancient debates (e.g., Gorgias and Plato) over whether words can represent experience, with later thinkers disagreeing on whether it arises from emotion or reason.
